Well, it did and we're taking the journey as a homeschool family.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.comBlogger133125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-37552899536301555892018-10-09T21:37:00.000-04:002018-10-09T21:37:40.494-04:00One Journey Ends, Another BeginsThis is a post that should probably have been written last year, when the homeschool journey was ending. But life. Both girls graduated from our homeschool and are thriving in college. Whitney is now a senior at UMF, she's been captain of the snowboard team since her sophomore year, involved in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and on the leadership team, found a great church, and is doing well academically. Sarah is a sophomore at Roanoke College, participates in Young Life and is a leader at the middle school, also has a great church, and is ditto on the academics. Both girls made the transition from homeschool to college pretty easily. I think the independent learning I encouraged here as they got into high school really has helped them in college. Because they were used to managing their time they have done well planning their time to fill it with clubs, athletics, social events and still have plenty of time to go to class and study. We are thrilled with the young women they have become.

The transition to the empty nest at home was both easy and not so easy. If you look online you see all sorts of articles and facebook posts about the angst and sadness about sending the kids off to college, especially the youngest or only. Sending ours off was easy, although a little harder with Sarah but definitely not the drama you read about. They're off doing what they should be doing and we're super proud of them. We're also enjoying the empty nest, getting out and doing adult stuff by ourselves, vacationing just the two of us.

But the empty nest isn't all fun. I think the transition was harder on me than the girls. It really started when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be when they grew up and suddenly last summer that time was here. I was hoping to have the summer to go through the house and do a good cleaning, some painting and organizing. That didn't happen partly because Bob asked me to work part time for him when his intern asked for time off then quit. I'm still trying to figure out what's next; one possibility is starting a bookkeeping business. I really like the idea of working for myself so that I can work around family needs, we'll see if I can work it out.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-21611398888381518262017-04-26T15:25:00.001-04:002017-04-26T15:25:32.837-04:00The Light is Getting Bright That light at the end of the tunnel? Yep, it's getting pretty bright these days. Our days of homeschooling are almost over. Sarah is almost done marine biology and government, her college class has only a couple more meetings, and then there's math...we'll still be doing math for a while, but it'll get done before graduation. Her official graduation day is May 27 but her party is on May 20. We've slowly started planning and I'm just hoping for a nice day.

The million dollar question is what's next? I'm not exactly sure but I do have some ideas rattling around in my head. Whitney has a year and a half left in Maine, then she's going to chase her snowboard dreams. I plan to go see a few more of her races this winter than I've been able to get to the last couple of years. Sarah will be starting at Roanoke in the fall which is close enough that I hope to visit a few times. I'd even like to spend some time in the area, sightsee, hike, and do stuff even if I don't see her. I haven't spent much time at all down in that part of Virginia and it's really pretty there. I can see Bob and I going down and doing some camping in the mountains.

I will be looking for some part time work, perhaps with the county or at least in our county. Traffic is stupid and I don't want to waste time in it if I don't have to. I'm tossing around a couple of ideas to earn money so we'll see what gels. I need to spend part of the summer cleaning the house, doing some painting and yardwork, and getting out with Bob for some fun. We got a mini-pack of 6 games to the minor league baseball team so that will be fun. And the tickets are cheap enough we can always pick up some more games when the girls are home.

We have a busy end of the summer, getting both girls ready for college. Of course Whitney needs to leave the day Sarah has to move in so she'll be on her own this year. I'm bummed about that but it can't be helped. I'll try to get up and see her the next weekend or something. I need to figure out how, in the little bit of time they both are home this summer, how to get Whitney down to see Roanoke. I think in September Bob and I will try to get away somewhere and I'm going to Maine sometime with my mom and there's parents weekend at Roanoke so it'll be a busy time.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-7005406741668695162017-03-15T22:26:00.001-04:002017-03-15T22:26:48.831-04:00Snow DaysSnow days are an interesting thing here. Our area gets enough snow that the public schools build in about five snow days every year. Most years they use a few of them, sometimes all of them, sometimes more.

It's a bit different at our house. When the girls were little they would get up, dress themselves, and be outside playing by 7:30am. They'd come in, get breakfast and hot chocolate, warm up, do some school. By that time their neighborhood friends were up and ready to go out to play. They'd gear up again to head outside for a while with their friends. When they came in it was time for more hot chocolate and to finish school. In a sense they had the best of both worlds, they got to keep moving forward with school but they also had plenty of time to play. The big advantage was that come June, they were done when I had planned it while their friends that went to school may have had a day or two added to the end of their school year to make up for days that they missed.

So off goes Whitney to college. In Maine. Where they get snow. And cancelled classes. She's had several days so far this semester where they've closed early, opened late, or cancelled all together. She still finds it really weird to have snow days. She's not really sure what to do with herself on those days. Yesterday and today were two of those days. Yesterday the campus closed early and she missed her night class again, for about the third time. Today it opened at noon, which worked fine for her since her first class was at 1:10. She also enjoyed the chance to sleep in a bit since she's still trying to get over her jet lag from a trip to Oregon. Hopefully this will be the last snow day for this year now that we're in the middle of March. They have a week and a half before spring break #2 so hopefully no more snow in that time and after they get back to school it will be April and spring should be here, even in Maine.

The snow that Whitney got that cancelled classes started here. We had some snow then sleet and the public schools were closed yesterday
and today. Sarah got all her work done both days. This wasn't a fun
snow, not even fun to take the dog out in to play. I definitely
understand why the schools were closed but it didn't stop education from
happening here.

We'll see what happens when Sarah goes off to Roanoke. It's in the mountains so she may get a few snow days. Guess we'll find out next winter.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-66270030806716797132017-03-01T09:22:00.000-05:002017-03-01T09:22:18.375-05:00Another Decision is Made!Sarah has made her decision and I think we're all happy about it. She plans to go to....Roanoke College in the fall.

She was invited to apply for the scholarship competition and we went down a couple of weeks ago for that. Bob even rearranged his schedule and took the day off to go down with us, his first trip to see the school. Sarah did her thing - a student panel with freshmen and sophomores, an interview, and a writing session. Bob and I did the parent thing - a student panel with seniors, a presentation by the financial aid office and about the curriculum. We had lunch together along with another presentation, then took the campus tour again, mainly for Bob's benefit. Sarah had been leaning towards Roanoke and going down again sealed the deal. We dropped the deposit off while we were there and she's gotten her welcome letter. She also accepted the service leadership fellows position. I think she'll have a great four years there!
Whitney wanted to go to a small college where there are good winters which meant New England or Colorado/Utah/Nevada. Sarah wants to stay in Virginia. At first she wanted to go to a college larger than Whitney's but still not too big and she wants to be in a smaller town/more rural area, not a city. We talked about quite a few Virginia schools and a few more that are out of state but still within about 4 hours. It's interesting the schools that made the cut since two are smaller than Whitney's and one is in a very urban area.

She applied early decision to Roanoke, Emory & Henry, Mary Washington, and Christopher Newport. So far she's been accepted to all of them but hasn't heard from CNU yet. I think the decision is coming down to Roanoke and E&H. We toured all the schools last fall and have been to CNU and Roanoke twice. More visits likely to Roanoke and E&H to come.

Roanoke - this was her favorite from our first step on campus. We were the only ones on the tour when we went and the campus is beautiful. We've made two visits, the first one in the fall to take a look and for an interview. We were impressed. Sarah applied for a Service Fellows position and we went back down for the interviews. They also had a parent session that morning and I really liked some of the programs they have there. They are very active in getting kids to the career center and focusing on what comes after college. They have a program to help with the transition to college. She hasn't heard back yet about it but hopefully will soon. Sarah was also encouraged to apply for the scholarship competition, which she did. Hopefully we'll hear about that soon and that will require another trip down in February. They have given Sarah quite a few scholarships so although the tuition is high it's looking doable. Hopefully she'll be invited to the scholarship competition, do well, and get more money.

University of Mary Washington - they were our second tour. We really liked the campus; it felt very "Virginia" to me, lots of brick buildings, trees, very pretty. I was impressed with some of the technology stuff they had. Sarah liked it but thinks it's too close to home and too urban although it seems very separate from Fredericksburg. She was not offered much financial aid but I guess that's the difference between a public school and a private one. I think they've fallen to third on the list.

Christopher Newport University - the third, and at the time I thought last tour. Bob was with us for this one since we were going to Williamsburg as well. Sarah liked the campus but I didn't (guess it's good I'm not the one that will be going there). It seemed like a bunch of big block buildings; although they were all brick, they all looked the same and have no uniqueness to them. We ran into a friend there, someone who had been in the youth group ages ago when Bob was leading it. She was so surprised to see us! There are some good things about the campus although it's very much in an urban area which Sarah didn't like. She's still waiting to hear from them although it should be in the next week or two since she applied early decision. I doubt that we'll get much financial aid, another state school.

Emory & Henry - this was a late, last minute add to the list. She scheduled the tour and I was pretty sure, especially since we'd already seen the other schools, that we were going to go since she had said she'd go but she was going to say nope, not for her. I was pleasantly surprised that it moved to the top of the list with Roanoke. We went for the tour and there were three other students. Another very pretty campus. The school feels big but it's a small school. Sarah had gotten an email from the admissions office and they said that since we were coming from so far they wanted to make the most of our time there and did she want to sit in on a class, meet with anyone while she was on campus. She said she'd like to meet with the golf coach so after the tour we did. This fall will be the first season of women's golf there (as well as at CNU and UMW) and the coach was very excited once he started talking to Sarah. He said he would love to have her on the team. After we talked with him we met with her admissions counselor and she did her "interview" which was more of a conversation (and interesting to watch). Sarah said that she loved the college but wished it had some a capella groups. That got her counselor all excited! He said that she should come there and get a group started. Fast forward to this weekend and she got an email inviting her to audition for a music scholarship. Um, she's had no musical training. I think she's going to apply/audition but we have some work to do. There's no harm in trying, right? She's gotten some nice financial aid from them which is good since it's a top contender. The one downside is the location. Yes, it's in Virginia but it's five hours down Interstate 81 so it's pretty far.

We'll have to see how things shake out. Still waiting on lots of information, from Roanoke about the Fellows spot and the scholarship competition, from E&H she'll need to schedule and audition and wait to hear about that, and from CNU waiting to hear if she got in or not. I really think at this point it comes down to Roanoke or E&H for her and financially I think one of those two will be the best option. Official decision day may still be a ways off but it would be nice to have the decision made.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-16656616915929516362017-01-08T21:04:00.003-05:002017-01-08T21:04:53.816-05:00First Semester DoneFirst semester, high school senior year and college sophomore year is done. Both girls did well and are happy to have had some time off from school. Sarah has already started school again and Whitney heads back to Maine tomorrow but classes don't start until Jan. 17.

Half of Sarah's senior year is done. Hard to believe we've only got a few months left. Soon it will be time to start thinking about her graduation party, ordering her diploma, and enjoying the last summer at home before college starts. This has been a much different experience with her applying for colleges than it was for Whitney. I'll share the details of that later but she applied to four schools and has gotten into three and is still waiting to hear from the last one. She is doing well in her classes at home and finished her first college class. We went to register her for spring classes the second week registration was open but Spanish 102 was already full. She was put on the wait list but never got notification that there was a spot for her so she missed out on Spanish. She did get into college composition so that's good and that class starts on Tuesday. She had a full fall finishing up a few things from last year and starting this year's work. With Whitney still around it's hard to get back into our regular routine but I'm ready to jump in and plow through the next few months.

Whitney is done her third semester. She's heading back to school early to get in some snowboarding and she's got a race next weekend. This past semester was tough with five classes, one of which was a class she really disliked but she's looking forward to this semester. She's got three professors she's had before, one of whom she loves, and a schedule where two of her classes only meet one day a week. She'll have plenty of time for snowboarding around her classes and studying. Even with her more open schedule she'll have a busy semester. She's co-captain of the snowboard team, she's doing some training with the Carrabassett Valley Academy (a top notch ski/snowboard school), she got a job as a student mentor, she's still involved with IVCF, and she's got her classes. There's probably more that she's doing but that's what I know about.

She's enjoyed the mental break from school and being home. She did get in some snowboarding at Massanutten while she was here. I'm sure she's looking forward to getting back to Maine and the excellent snow they have up there. They've had quite a bit whereas we haven't gotten much and it's even been iffy for snowmaking. She'd probably like the extra week at home but she's excited to be getting on the slopes and will have some quiet time at school before her roommate and everyone else gets back.

Here's to a good spring semester!Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-57965991951189201492016-09-01T21:01:00.001-04:002016-09-01T21:01:52.039-04:00Back to MaineOn Friday Bob, Whitney, and I headed north to pick up her things in New Hampshire then on to Maine for move in. The drive to NH was really long, the usual 9 hour drive took us 12 hours between traffic and construction. Ugh. Partly, too, since we knew it was going to take a lot longer we stopped and actually ate dinner (and I think lunch) at the rest areas instead of getting it to go so that added a bit of time as well.

Saturday morning we packed up the things Whitney left at her aunt's house over the summer and made a stop at Target to pick up a few last minute things before she left civilization. We got to Farmington, checked into the hotel, then went to find dinner in town.

Check in started at 9 on Sunday morning and we were there shortly after that and well before Alison got there. We unloaded the two cars and started organizing the chaos on Whitney's half of the room. We had everything put away by lunch time and took a walk downtown after Bob moved my car and Whitney got a prime spot beside her dorm. We went to check out Reny's, a cool discount department store, and bought a few things there then went to the Farmington House of Pizza for lunch (really good pizza!).

Monday Bob and I left after a quick stop at the bookstore (side note - what college doesn't have their bookstore open on move in day?? Students need to pick up books and parents are willing to drop money on school labeled attire.) and headed down the coast to Kennebunkport for lunch. Sadly the place I really wanted to stop at was a different fancier restaurant but I still managed to find some good lobster for lunch. Whitney got right into classes Monday morning and has had a couple of club meetings so has been busy. All in all a good start.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-10728470688507007382016-08-25T17:02:00.000-04:002016-08-25T17:02:21.264-04:00Back at ItWe're almost to the end of our first week of school and so far, so good. The first day ended up being a field trip, although I didn't go along. Sarah went with a friend downtown and they hit all the tourist high spots - the Archives, the "dinosaur museum" although most of the dinosaur exhibits are closed for a couple more years, the American history museum, Shake Shack for lunch, and the Castle. I knew she really wanted to go but I really wanted to get a start on school so the compromise was that she could go as long as they went to the Archives. She said they did that first to "get it out of the way." They had a really good time together. It was time to hit the books on Tuesday. Senior year is under way.

Tomorrow we leave to head to Maine. We'll stop off in NH tomorrow night at Bob's sister's to pick up the things Whitney left there, then go to Farmington on Saturday. She moves in on Sunday; same dorm, different room, different roommate.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-69815560389164428452016-08-09T16:22:00.000-04:002016-08-25T17:03:27.531-04:00Community CollegeWe had our meeting yesterday with the counselor at the community college. It went well. Sarah did well on the placement tests and was approved to take Spanish. The only real hitch is that the class we wanted (M/W afternoons) was full with a one person wait list. Since it's two weeks before classes start we didn't want to risk putting her name on the list and her end up not getting in. That was the only option for a class locally when I looked. They've opened more sections since then so she had a few choices. We declined the Friday hybrid class after having bad experiences with that type of learning in the past. She is signed up for a T/Th morning class. Not really the best option, but it will work ok. On Tuesdays she'll have to take her lunch with her and go straight from class to preschool. Hopefully she'll be able to get at least a math lesson done in the afternoon when she gets home. Tuesdays will be full since she's got dance in the evening. It will be an interesting first college experience and hopefully it will go well since it will "be on her permanent record."

Now that we know for sure that she's in the class I'll have to take a look at our plans for the year and see if we need to adjust. Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-78036254497672570892016-08-01T21:29:00.000-04:002016-08-01T21:29:28.965-04:00What a YearSo it's been quite the year. We've had a lot going on that has made life interesting. The summer has been mostly relaxing, it's almost done, and it's time for year two of college and senior year of high school.

College
The first year of college is done for Whitney. UMF has been a mixed bag for her. She's decided that while the location is pretty and is close to some great snowboarding, it's been harder for her than she thought it would be to be so far from hone. Academically she's done really well, made High Honors Dean's List both semesters and she's found some really great professors (as well as some rather quirky ones). She has made the transition from a homeschool student to college student very well. She found a church that she likes and as the only college student attending there has all the attention of the "little old ladies." Funny thing is that one of them has a daughter that lives not far from us and her son goes to college in Maine.

On the not so good side, besides being far from home, the college isn't as socially welcoming as some tout it being. She's had a really hard time making friends and finding her place. Even among the snowboarders it's hard since they're mostly focused on fun, not competition and most smoke pot and/or drink and she's just not into that at all.

Snowboarding has also been a mixed bag. She competed in the USASA Maine Mountain Series and went to races in Maine and Vermont. It was kind of funny that she's in the middle of some great skiing in Northern New England and yet she got to more competitions when she lived in Virginia. It's all about location. Her college coach sent her to the USCSA Nationals (the collegiate association) which were held in Lake Placid in March and she also went back to USASA Nationals in Colorado in early April. The competitions were good, she placed 7th at Lake Placid and 2nd at Colorado. Besides her teammates, the other problem was that the college snowboard coach didn't really know enough to help her much and didn't seem very organized. He would schedule practices then not show up and there were other problems. Hopefully things will be different this winter.

Her major is a perfect fit and if it wasn't for that and some stuff that she's working on for snowboarding, she'd likely transfer. She hasn't been able to find the same major at another school at all, much less in an area that has snow. Her plan is to finish classes in 2.5 years and be done a semester early. We have high hopes for the snowboarding things that are in the works but we won't know more until she gets back to school later this month.

Junior/Senior Year
Sarah's junior year was a mess to be frank. We had a lot of family issues going on that were distracting but hopefully a lot of that is behind us and she'll have a stellar senior year. The highlights were the writing classes, at least for me. I don't think she could take a writing class that she liked, but I really liked that they were outsourced and I didn't have to grade them. Mainly I helped her proofread her work before she turned it in and that made it better for us. She has geometry and chemistry to finish from this year as well as start most of her senior year classes.

A very last minute decision was to pursue taking Spanish at the local community college. She's been going on mission trips to Guatemala for four years. She had been talking more this summer about studying archaeology in college, mainly because she loves ancient Egypt. We started talking some about Guatemala and I found a college that has a focus on Central American archaeology, which got her thinking. She had a fabulous time in Guatemala this year, I'm still not really sure why this year was so different than past years but it was. She came back really wanting to focus on a Central/Latin America anthropology/archaeology degree with a minor in Spanish or possibly majoring in Spanish. This is so different than anything she had really been talking about all year my head is kind of spinning.

This new focus has really put us into a bit of a time crunch. She really wants to take Spanish this year and at this point the best option was the cc but with her heading back to camp as soon as she got back from Guatemala, it left us scrambling to get everything taken care of in time. It's a different procedure for dual enrolled students than it is for regular students and she's barely around enough to get it done. We have a meeting next Monday and hopefully we can get it all taken care of then.

So besides working to get her signed up at the cc for Spanish, she's refocused on four year colleges. Another time crunch. Since her plan has been to go to the cc for two years then transfer she hasn't taken the SAT yet and we haven't really looked at colleges besides just a bit online. We're now looking for colleges not too far from home, not too big, etc., etc. She has the first Saturday in October on the calendar to take the SAT, she's already applied to Roanoke College and is also looking at Lycoming College. A lot of things will have to fall into place for her to go to either of those colleges so I still think that going to the local cc might be the best option to start for her. It's shaping up to be a very busy fall!Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-11958887294266118962015-11-08T18:13:00.000-05:002015-11-08T18:13:52.892-05:00Two Months InWe're about two months into the school year and things are going pretty well. Probably the best thing is the writing class. It's worked out really well, she's learning, and her essay writing is improving which was my goal. Her last assignments for the first quarter are due this week, then her second quarter classes start. She's finishing Writing Mechanics I and Essay I and will be taking the second class for each of those. I'm so glad I stumbled across this class.

The rest of her classes are moving along. She just started chemistry this week and will begin geometry next week. She's enjoying history and literature this year, but the world religions class isn't exactly what she was looking for and she's not really liking it. This is one case where I've said too bad, you need to push through and get it done.

We've continued discussions about college and her future. She's been all over the place in ideas about what she wants to do which has made it hard to help her narrow down school choices. I think she's making progress though. In January she's going to go to San Diego to look at Impact 195 School of Ministry, a discipleship program. She feels passionate about mission work, especially in Guatemala, but I don't really see her going out to California. There's a similar type school in New Jersey that she is going to look into as well. She's also looking at colleges, mostly in Virginia, with an eye to working with special needs people. She hasn't decided if she wants to work with preschool kids, youth, or adults, but she's got a heart for working with this special group and does it well. We'll see where she ends up taking her.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-37118380414350583662015-09-10T21:50:00.001-04:002015-09-10T21:50:50.643-04:00Almost the First DayRosie Jane is still having a great, if cold, time running around Germany with her grandmother. She gets home Saturday night and we'll finally be able to start school on Monday. I feel like on the one hand, we're way behind, but on the other, she's studying 20th century history this year so several stops on their trip will count as a field trip.

I'm working on getting ready for Monday. I ordered some books today and checked into a few others. Since what I ordered today was for a semester long class, it's ok that I'm behind in getting it. One set of books came in the mail the other day. I need to sit down tomorrow and work on writing up her first week's schedule.

I finally made a decision about her writing class and went in a totally different direction than I had thought. I was looking for some in person classes to give her both a teacher that knows how to teach writing as well as classmates but the time/location of one was bad, another was ok, then I found a third that might have worked better until I realized that it was Thursday morning and I have bible study then. I was also looking at an online option. I just couldn't decide and happened to come across a class that is done through email. The company offers lots of options/levels and I could see a path through the courses. I gave Rosie her choice and she chose the email option. She's already gotten her first couple of assignments (she's taking two classes with them) and I can't wait to see how it works out. I'm really hoping it works out well, she really needs to improve her writing and I can't help her. This is one place I really need to farm a class out and have someone else teach her.

The other bits and pieces are falling into place. We may not be ready to go 100% on Monday but I have enough to get her started.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-58700246387206600282015-08-14T17:04:00.000-04:002015-08-14T17:04:29.352-04:00And We Have A Plan!My daughter has been so busy this summer, mostly away from home, that I've had a really hard time getting her to sit down with me so we can talk about some school stuff. I've had a general plan for her junior year for quite a while but I needed her input to finalize a few classes. One or two things are still kind of up in the air, but at least for them we have a plan A and a backup. Now that I know the plan I need to start ordering the few things that I need. I do still have time even though it's already getting to be late August; she's going to Germany early next month and won't be starting school until Sept. 14.

On to the plan -
history - 20th Century history using Sonlight
English - literature of monsters (Frankenstein, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, Metamorphosis, plus a few others) plus an outside writing class (one of those tbd classes)
science - chemistry
math - geometry
electives - world religions, personal finance, finishing food science, and possibly art history

In the spring the plan is to sign her up for German at the local community college. I'm hoping that she'll be ready for college classes then but we'll see. There's no way she could do it this fall between taking her sister to college and going to Germany, she'd miss too many classes right at the beginning of the semester.

She's still going to be volunteering at the preschool at our church one afternoon a week and is hoping to get a job, perhaps at the dance studio. She'll be dancing most weeknights (which makes getting another type of job difficult) and we're looking into getting a membership at the county rec center where she'd like to take spin and zumba classes. She also needs to finish up her driver's ed class and get in all her driving hours. It's shaping up to be a busy junior year. Along with all the classes, dance, and other fun stuff, we need to find time to narrow her interests, research colleges, and make a few trips to visit the short list.

Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-80747544159659060232015-07-01T09:28:00.000-04:002015-07-01T09:28:08.577-04:00July Already? How'd That Happen?Wow! Hard to believe that it's July already. It seems like we just finished snowboarding and now we're done with school for the summer, had the graduation party, and we're thick into summer fun. The graduation stuff went mostly well; the party was great with lots of friends and family here to celebrate Whitney's accomplishments. We had a beautiful day to celebrate. On the down side, handing over the diploma and taking pictures didn't go so well. Oh well, she's done, mostly happy about that and right now is having fun being a counselor at camp. She'll spend her summer working with teens and horses so I'm not sure life could get much better for her.

School is also done for Sarah for the year. After vacation (to Maine, Quebec, and Niagara Falls) school kind of fizzled out. Pretty much everything was to a point we could call it done; the only thing that wasn't was math. I think we'll just pick up where we left off when we start again in the fall.

The final transcript has been sent in to UMF, Whitney is anxiously awaiting on her roommate/dorm assignment which should be coming soon, college stuff is starting to appear in stores, so things are on track for her heading off at the end of the summer.

I need to finalize Sarah's grades and really start thinking about next year. I think she'll be taking a couple of classes at a local homeschool program, a writing class and one on study skills. She really needs some outside help with writing, I just am not that great at teaching writing and it's not something she's more naturally good at so an outside class is needed. I have several other ideas for her, an online psych class, hopefully German at the local community college in the spring, and the rest will be at home. I think I've found her a lab partner for chemistry; if it doesn't work out, I'll help her with the labs. I need to finalize some of these plans so I can get her signed up for the outside classes, work on the budget and get things ordered. In the good news/ bad news category she won't be starting school until the middle of September because she's going to Germany with her grandmother. That will give me a bit more time to get organized but will be a really late start. Hopefully it won't impact her outside classes too much, something else I need to look into.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-66188855317095142072015-05-21T22:48:00.003-04:002015-05-21T22:48:58.544-04:00Around the Corner...Graduation!Over the last couple of months, after my life slowed down a bit when snowboarding was finished I had several ideas percolating to write about but then life got busy again. We're in the home stretch for Whitney, one day of "school" left, the we'll hand her diploma over, and have a party on Saturday to celebrate. I had to talk her into having a party but agreed to her desire to just give her her diploma with no "ceremony." I'll probably say a few words, but that will be the extent of it. On the other hand, for a girl who was homeschooled and "has no friends" she sure is having a lot of people at her party. We invited the family, some friends from church, a lot of her friends from a church organization she's involved with, as well as her friends. Of course, these are busy teens and her really good friends are all working Saturday and can't come. I'm thinking of doing a small cookout/going away party for her in August, one last chance for her to get together with her friends.

I'm so proud of the hard work she's put in getting an education. She loves to learn, works hard at school even when it's a subject she doesn't really like. She's inquisitive and seeks out knowledge. I think she'll do really well when she gets to college. She's going to have to work hard but she'll do what she needs to do and not just for the grades but to learn. Hard to believe that we're here already, graduation is tomorrow, then it's a fun summer at camp and August will be here before we know it. She's become a wonderful young lady and I can't wait to see where life takes her!Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-73451014307181209602015-04-08T17:28:00.000-04:002015-04-08T17:28:31.778-04:00Time for a breather, maybeI'd say it's time for a short breather but I'm not sure. I've been going back and forth for snowboarding, here half the week, at the slopes half the week and I'm ready for things to slow down for a while. I'm not sure I'm going to get that break though. Snowboard season is over, Whitney won in her age group at USASA Nationals, so it's time to pack up the winter gear and look towards spring. Problem is that we're at the point of only having about eight weeks of school left with her until graduation, I have to plan her party, plan vacation, and have a bunch of other stuff on my plate, including homeschooling. I do feel that things are a bit easier now that I'm home all the time but I'm still trying to get my feet under me after being gone for a week for Nationals and figure out what's what. We must press forth and finish strongly!Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-62015990791804020742015-03-18T14:55:00.000-04:002015-03-18T14:55:12.900-04:00The decision is made! It's been a long road to get here, starting with the first college visit last February, but the college decision has been made. After much thought, prayer, and angst, she's decided to go to the University of Maine at Farmington. The accepted students day went really well, she felt more comfortable there, and there was plenty of snow for her. She had also gotten a letter from Plymouth that outlined the adventure education major and realized that it really wasn't what she wanted. She was very disappointed because she really liked the Plymouth campus and the town but the program was not what she was looking for and even if it was it would preclude her from doing some things she really wanted to continue in college, like working and snowboarding. At Farmington, she'll have the opportunity to do both of those things and more because she'll have the time.

She's already been talking with the ski/snowboard team coach. She didn't meet him when we were up there but did talk to a couple of guys on the ski team, who told her that they'd work on converting her to skis. Not much of a chance of that happening! She's worked really hard to get where she is and she isn't about to give that up. Since we got back, she's gotten a bit more information from the ski team coach and he also put her in contact with another snowboarder who wants to build up the snowboard part of the team. The good news is that she's helped do that before and can do it again. They compete in USASA as well as USCSA (the collegiate ski and snowboard association). She's excited about the prospects there.

She'll be majoring in outdoor recreation business administration, a good fit for an outdoors kid. ORBA majors are required to do an internship so she'll have the opportunity to make some good connections for jobs after graduation. The location of the school is pretty great for doing outdoor stuff, a small ski area is 5 minutes away, Sunday River and Sugarloaf are both about an hour away, there's hiking, lakes and rivers, places to bike, all sorts of outdoor activities around. Plus she'll be in Maine. An exciting new adventure awaits her this fall. Now to get her through the last few months of her senior year.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-49446682975573154192015-02-26T10:40:00.001-05:002015-02-26T10:40:55.921-05:00Accepted Students DaySo with four acceptances it's time to start narrowing down the field. Green Mountain was the first to go; it was just too granola/crunchy/Vermonty for my girl. Johnson State is also a no. She told me the other day it was too generic. It's a newer school and looks it. The town of Johnson is pretty nice, it's really close to Stowe and other great ski resorts, but the campus is a mile or two out of town on the top of a hill and pretty boring actually. It does have it's own terrain park but that's not Whitney's thing. Still in contention is Plymouth State, which won her heart a long time ago and University of Maine, Farmington, which has the right program.

We had been planning our New Hampshire February vacation for this week for a while. Part of the plan was to head out to Farmington on Friday for another tour of campus, then going to a boarder cross race at Sugarloaf on Saturday. While we were still at home Whitney got information about the accepted students days at UMF. Conveniently, one of the days for her major fell while we were planning to be in NH. So we changed our plans a bit and went to UMF yesterday and scratched the bx race (she's got a sore knee so probably wouldn't have done it anyway).

There was a small group of kids and parents there yesterday. The kids went off for a tour of the school, to sit in on a class related to the major they're interested in, lunch in the cafeteria, meet with a couple of professors in their major, then finish the tour. The parents met with someone from the testing/counseling office and from student life (she talked about the dorms, clubs, and the trips her office plans). We then had a tour and had lunch in the cafeteria. The food is pretty good so that's a plus. There's much to like about the campus, except that it's about 12 hours away from home. On the plus side for Whitney it has the major she's looking for, she'll be able to work and snowboard (at some pretty awesome resorts), she'll have plenty of snow - they've had over 100" so far this winter. While she didn't have a chance to talk to the ski team coach, she did talk to the captain of the ski team and one of the other members. They really weren't much help, not knowing much about snowboarding, but were friendly and chatted with her about the team. They highly recommended that she contact the ski coach and talk to him. They thought that she would have no problem if she put out the word in getting more kids to snowboard with her.

She left with a better impression than she had last time. We had a bunch of our questions answered, so while she hasn't officially said yes to going there, it looks like she'll be a UMF Beaver in the fall.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-90917536041773941802014-12-23T08:37:00.001-05:002014-12-23T08:37:14.947-05:00Finally!Sweet Pea finally officially heard from the last college. This has truly been a strange experience. This is the school she applied early decision to but it's the last one that she heard from. She sent in her application in early October and we thought, mistakenly, that since she applied early decision that she'd hear back pretty quickly. She got some mail from them, including information to set up an account on their portal and an email account. We'd check it but the only status was that they'd received her application. Nothing. She emailed the ski team coach to get more information from him since after talking with a student athlete at the school it sounded like as a snowboarder she'd be able to practice with them and keep competing through USASA. She got an email back from him and emailed with more questions. Then nothing.

I messaged a friend I know who has a freshman daughter at the school and asked when they heard she got in and how they found out. She said it was mid-December and they got a letter in the mail. OK, at least we can rest easy for a bit and know that we're looking for mail, not an email or a phone call. So about two weeks ago she got another email from the ski coach "Congratulations! I heard you were accepted..." Huh, news to us. And still nothing from teh school. On Sunday I told her to check her portal again and see if anything was updated there and if she didn't hear anything over Christmas break to email them and ask in January when offices were open again. Yes, on the portal it looks like she's been accepted. Weird.

FINALLY in yesterday's mail was the official acceptance letter. I haven't had a chance to read it yet (we got home late from celebrating Christmas as my mom's house) but she was accepted, was offered merit scholarships (like the other schools), and was admitted into the Honor's Program. Very exciting! Now the tough part, figuring out which school will be the best fit for her future goals.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-28416378748454295312014-12-12T20:51:00.001-05:002014-12-12T20:51:50.685-05:00Getting AcceptancesWell, the acceptances are starting to roll in. Shortly after we got back from our trip to New England, Sweet Pea got an email from Green Mountain College letting her know she got in. The funniest part of this is that she never completed her application. A few weeks later, she got an email from Johnson State and they just needed her recommendation and would get her an answer in a week or so. This was right before Thanksgiving so it did take longer than a week but she also got in there. She got a phone call from them telling her she was accepted and she just got the official letter in the mail yesterday. Also in yesterday's mail was this envelope...

Yep, she got into Plymouth State University as well. She's excited because it's her first choice, but it also makes it more real for her and that's making her nervous.

The funny, ironic thing is that she still hasn't heard from the University of Maine yet and she applied there early decision. Hopefully she'll hear from them soon. Then the real stress will begin, which school to choose. I think probably any of them would be good, all have given her some good scholarship money, it's just going to be a matter of what's most important to her. So for all you out there worrying, yes, you can homeschool and get into the college of your choice.
Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-58764901515833792682014-12-02T22:41:00.000-05:002014-12-02T22:41:22.037-05:00Waiting is Hard! All the college applications are in and have been for a while. All the schools she applied to have rolling admission so we thought we'd hear sooner but as of now have only heard from one college. She got into Green Mountain College in Vermont. After our visit there it fell to the bottom of the list, but it's good to know she's been accepted somewhere. I'll admit it, it validates all the hard work we've done over the years and I feel like I got the stamp of approval even though it really has nothing to do with me. We're still waiting to hear from the other three schools. Hopefully we'll hear from UMF in the next couple of weeks; I have an online friend whose daughter goes there and she said her daughter applied early decision (as did Whitney) and heard in early December. She should be hearing from Johnson State soon as well; she got an email from them saying they had everything except her recommendation and once they had that she'd hear in about a week. No word from Plymouth State at all. Waiting is hard.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-61445692219157412122014-11-08T22:44:00.000-05:002014-11-08T22:44:30.188-05:00Colleges in Review, Part 2After visiting UMF and Plymouth, we went to hang out with my sister-in-law for a few days and visit a couple of colleges in Vermont. We had a bunch of fun with my 3 year old nephew but on the agenda was Green Mountain College and Johnson State College.

First up was Green Mountain College. It was in a really, really small town in a flat valley near New York. You could actually see NY from the campus, it was just past the farm and on the other side of the river. The town (Poultney) had three churches, a couple of cafe-type places, a grocery store and hardware store and not much else. It was about 20 minutes from Rutland which is a much larger town. You drive through this really small town, down Main Street, and the campus is in front of you on the edge of town. We went in and there was a welcome sign for Whitney. We took the tour and there were some pretty interesting things about the campus. For one, most of the buildings have classrooms on the main floor and dorm rooms on the second and third (if there's a third floor). The basements hold different things - in one building there's a bike shop where you can work on your bike or have someone help you with it, in another there's a dance/yoga studio. The library was really nice and I liked their tutor system. There's a farm on the edge of campus where they grow food (produce, pigs, and chickens for eggs) that's used in the dining hall. The tour guide said that a lot of the food was locally sourced, which would be easy in that area. Whitney also spent some time talking with the guy in the Green MAP office, the outdoor club. They have skis to rent/borrow and lead all sorts of adventures hiking, skiing, etc. Sounds like it was really active and a great opportunity for Whitney to do stuff and get into leadership there. The down side to the college is the Vermont-y vibe we both were getting and Whitney didn't like that much.

When we were done the tour, she met with the director of admissions for about 10 minutes then I went up to talk with them. They had a good conversation, Whitney talked about her outdoor experience both with the family and working. When I went up we talked a bit about the school and also finances. Overall we left with a good impression but felt it wasn't the school for her.

The next day we went up to Johnson State College. We drove through lots of small towns to get there including Stowe, passed Ben & Jerry's but didn't stop. The college is again in a small town but this time there was no bigger town nearby. We did find an area outside of town/next town over that had a couple of fast food places, big grocery store, drug store, etc. Johnson is bigger than Poultney but to get to the college you go into town, turn right over the river then go up the hill and the college is pretty much the only thing up there. Again we did the tour and saw the campus. It's nice, a newer college; nothing seemed much older than the 1980s. Whitney went in thinking she wasn't going to like the school and ended up liking it enough to keep it on the list as #3. The built up part of the campus is small but they own a lot of land, enough that they have their own terrain park. Too bad Whitney isn't interested in riding the rails.

After we finished the tour, an assistant director of admissions happened to walk in behind us. We had a nice chat with her, got some more information about the college, and I asked some questions about Whitney applying as a homeschooler which really seemed like no big deal to them. Whitney had planned to wait to apply until after we got home to see if she liked the college enough to apply, which she's done.

So that was our grand tour of colleges, the Open House at UMF, a drive/walk through again at Plymouth, and tours at Green Mountain and Johnson State. Now the waiting game begins, all her applications are in, she took notes right after each visit, she's reranked the schools, and now we see where she gets in before the real angst starts and she has to make a decision.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-75000353350227669492014-11-05T20:56:00.000-05:002014-11-05T20:57:28.381-05:00Colleges in Review, Part 1<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

We're back from our trip to New England visiting colleges and it seems just
in time. There was a big Nor'easter on Sunday and they got snow, at least in
Maine. We had a good trip and visiting the colleges definitely helped provide
some clarity.

First up was University of Maine at Farmington. We got to the hotel late
Friday night but it was pretty easy to find. In the morning we went into
Farmington and found where we needed to go on campus. The open house started in
Merrill Hall and included a welcome from the Director of Admissions, the
President of the college, and a student. The president is a hoot! From
everything we saw and heard about her, she's well liked by the students and
very involved in campus life. After we finished there we went to one of the
other buildings to meet with some of the professors from the business program.
Whitney is interested in ORBA - Outdoor Recreation Business Administration.
There were only three students there including Whitney, one was also interested
in ORBA, the other was looking at business psychology. Since it was a small
group it made for some pretty good discussion and we learned a lot. There was
quite a bit of discussion about the required internship and we found out that
with some coordination with the director of Camp Highroad she'd be able to do
her internship there if she wanted. They'd have to have her do more than camp
counselor or leading groups on the ropes course but it could be done. Whitney
had a better feel for the program and the requirements when we finished talking
with them. We stayed to hear what the social science professors had to say
during the next session, which was interesting.

We had lunch in the dining hall, actually brunch since it was a Saturday.
They had a sandwich bar, salad bar, looked liked an area for soups, and a
buffet line set up with hot breakfast stuff and more lunch/dinner type food.
The food was good and the dining hall was nice. We happened to sit at a table
with a man who works at the college and had a really good conversation with
him, mostly about what Whitney was interested in and how much snow they get in
Farmington. After lunch we took a tour of the campus. We weren't with the best
group (most of the kids were younger high school students) but the campus is
nice. When we finished the tour, we made a quick stop at the bookstore then
walked around the town some before meeting my aunt and uncle for an early
dinner. The town is small, the campus is small, but it sounds like it's a
pretty active campus if you like getting out and going - hiking, on the river,
skiing/snowboarding, anything outside. There really isn't too much in town but
there is a small movie theater, a few stores and cafes, enough for a small
town.

We also had a chance to talk with the student that spoke in the morning.
She's on the basketball team and was the point of contact for any prospective
students that weren't able to make it to the sports discussion in the morning.
The athletic director and a few of the coaches were only available in the morning
because they had to be at a soccer game in the afternoon so Whitney didn't have
a chance to talk to them. It sounds like the ski/snowboard team is pretty
active and they'd welcome Whitney onto it to work out and train. It also sounds
like they'd be willing to work with her so she'd be able to keep competing.

We stayed overnight in Farmington then drove over to Plymouth State
University in New Hampshire. As we crossed the river and went around the
traffic circle, Whitney commented that she forgot how pretty it is there. I'd
agree that Plymouth probably has the prettiest campus of the ones she's looked
at but UMF was nice as well. We parked and walked around campus and around the
town a bit since it was Sunday and she'd already taken a tour there. We stopped
in an artists co-op and bought a couple of things. Since this was the first
non-snowy time that we'd been to Plymouth, it was nice to walk around and see
the campus and town as well as some of the surrounding area.

Verdict so far -

UMF - Nice campus, probably the best program (it integrates outdoor learning
well with the business), sounds like it offers her the best chance to keep
competing in snowboarding while studying

Plymouth - prettiest campus, good program in outdoor education where she
could get a minor in business

Both schools are within an hour of several good ski areas where she can
snowboard and also work. Both have ski/snowboard teams or clubs as well as an
outdoor club for her to get involved with to do things other than snowboarding.
We've been busy with college applications, school, work, and life in general. I'm glad that for the most part the application stuff is finished. Now it's time to hit up a few colleges so informed decisions can be made once the acceptance letters come in.

First up on the schedule is the open house at the University of Maine, Farmington. From what we've seen online, the town is small and the school is very small. Sounds like almost the perfect place for Sweet Pea. The open house includes lunch on campus, campus tours, meetings with faculty, and I'm not sure what else. It should give her a good feel for the campus and the goings on there.

Next up will be another visit to Plymouth State University. We were there in February and took a tour then, which included lunch in the dining hall. Since we're going to be up there way again we wanted to stop here again to refresh memories and make sure it was still #1 on the list. We won't be meeting with anyone but walking around campus and getting a better look at the town will be nice. We've been there twice in the winter, once over Christmas break when it was brutally cold and windy then again in February which wasn't so bad. It'll be nice to check it out in the fall when we can walk around town, see where some of the other buildings are that we didn't get to before, and get a better look at the local area.

The last two schools are in Vermont, Green Mountain College and Johnson State College. Both offer the major she's looking for, both are near ski areas and in small towns. They seem to be what she's looking for, I guess we'll find out when we get there.

I'm excited about the trip, it's a great time of year to be heading to New England. We'll have some free time to spend in the mountains and driving around will be amazing with the leaves at their peak or just past. Hopefully when we get back she'll be able to say these colleges are still on the list, but this one dropped off. If nothing else, she'll have a better idea of what they all look like and offer so she can make a better decision. Now we just wait on the acceptance letters.Debbihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16279811916639260590noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-689126848074528838.post-19942432767351987092014-10-12T21:19:00.000-04:002014-10-12T21:19:00.318-04:00Food Fun!Probably one of the best classes going on this year is Food Science. Both girls are working on it and we've been eating pretty well while they're learning about cooking and baking. Sweet Pea is working through Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for the Food and Rosie Jane is doing his I'm Just Here for More Food. We loved "Good Eats" when it was on the air and these books are like an extension of the show. They describe the how's of cooking/baking and the why's of doing certain things. When the girls finish the book they are working on, they'll switch which means cooking and baking all year!

Here's a few samples of what they've been cooking.
